2009-10 Fernleaf Butter, Scott's 'Terra Nova' hut, Cape Evans

Two pats of Fernleaf butter, made by the Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company, and a cotton ration bag, Scott's Terra Nova hut, Cape Evans.

A discussion was held during the summer conservation season around the treatment of the two pats of Fernleaf butter inside a cotton ration bag. With fat migration from the butter to the bag an issue, a separating barrier layer of Tyvek and sheet of Reemay was inserted between the butter and the ration bag. The final location of the butter is intended to be where it was found, i.e. adjacent to the butter boxes in the stables. There was significant media interest in the discovery and treatment of the butter, with TVNZ filming a story on it during the summer conservation season.
