2009-10 AHT's Lucy Skinner working on penguin carcass, Scott's 'Terra Nova' hut

2009-10 Summer. Antarctic Heritage Trust Conservator Lucy Skinner undertaking conservation treatment on an Emperor penguin carcass, outside Scott's Terra Nova hut, Cape Evans.

Eight Emperor penguin carcasses were excavated out of the snow and ice near Terra Nova hut. Loose scoria and dirt was brushed from the carcasses, with dirt more firmly attached being dislodged using a trowel or stipple brush. Water and detergent was used on the penguin heads to clean the beaks, feathers around the eyes, and the tail. Once cleaned on top the penguins were turned over in order to clean the undersides. By this stage they were beginning to thaw in the warmth of the sun and a yellow coloured mixed blubber and watery substance on their skin was thawing out. As much as possible of this secretion was removed using a trowel and paper towels. It was discovered that the penguins were originally lying within the Stables, where they were left by the Ross Sea Party, and were moved by hut restoration parties in the 1970's. It was decided that the carcasses should return to their original position in the Stables.
