2009-10 AHT's Fran Clarke treating Stables blubber stove, Cape Evans

2009-10 Summer. Antarctic Heritage Trust Conservator Fran Clarke undertaking conservation treatment on the Stables blubber stove, inside the temporary conservation workshop setup outside Scott's Terra Nova hut, Cape Evans.

The base and top of the Stables stove were melted out using the glycol melter unit and removed from the blubber enriched soil underneath. Following conservation treatment, and once the carpentry work was complete in the Stables, the stove base was reburied in the blubber enriched soil and the stove top placed back into position using historic photographs as basis for orientation. During excavation works in the Stables and environs, the original Stables stove flue, previously thought lost, was discovered (identifiable due to its unique diameter).
