2009-10 Cape Evans, Stables rehabilitation - Stables North wall (130)

2009-10 Summer. Stables North wall with some historic cladding and contemporary materials removed, exposing the Stables bays, Scott's Terra Nova hut, Cape Evans.

Part of the Stables rehabilitation involved rebuilding the North wall in a multi-step process. This included removing various layers of contemporary materials and historic cladding. After adding a small blocking member to extend the existing "top plate", reinstating a stud, and removing door D3 the wall was sheathed in plywood scribed to the roof sheathing. A layer of hessian was installed across the stud faces (visible to the interior) to conceal the plywood from the interior. A trench was dug 500mm below grade and then polycarbonate was installed to the bottom of the trench and approximately 100mm up the wall. Installed in weatherboard fashion above that was a 1m band of bituthene and Tyvek to the top of the wall. Following that, the wall was covered in canvas and re-clad in new feather edge Scots Pine and heroic era cladding.
