2004-05 Shackleton's 'Nimrod' hut floor (003)

2004-05 Conservation season at Shackleton's Nimrod Hut at Cape Royds. The conservation team inspected the floors in all areas of the hut and found them to be sound though some boards are loose. New floor mats were installed at the entrance to the hut. Brass screws were placed at intervals throughout the hut to serve as datums and the floor levels were recorded. It was found to be a remarkably level building. A bow of 70 mm was measured along the north wall top plate and the northeast corner of the building was 75 mm out of plumb. An investigation of the trusses revealed that they were in urgent need of adjustment and a plan for this work was prepared for the next season.
