2009-10 Ponting's Darkroom during ice removal, Scott's 'Terra Nova' hut

2009-10 Summer. Ponting's Darkroom with floor deconstructed and ice removed, Scott's Terra Nova hut, Cape Evans.

Ice-removal from underneath Ponting's Darkroom required all artefacts to be removed, after which a survey was made of the floor, and the general furniture layout was sketched. Floor components were marked-up and sketches were made of each subsequent layer during deconstruction. The floorboards and Rubberoid flooring layers, all in generally good condition, were stored on top of the Darkroom during the work. Before commencing with the ice removal, the roof of the Darkroom was enclosed in plastic sheeting and ducts with in-line fans were installed to exhaust the space directly out the historic ventilator at the centre of the hut. As per the previous season, all of the accessible ice was removed mechanically, and the remaining under-floor areas were cleared using ice-melting equipment.
